Powerful Female Role Models

Women in media are often portrayed as weak, unintelligent, and requiring a man to rescue them. Good news is, that is not all women – that is not even most women. Just like men, women can accomplish anything they set their minds to.

With hard work and dedication, women have been achieving great things for decades, despite the media’s lack of attention. The following is a list of women who have achieved greatness in arts and sciences, business and politics. But, these are not the only women doing great things, millions of women defeat the odds every day. And who knows, maybe one day your name will be on this list!


Audra McDonald

Kathryn Bigelow

Kathryn Bigelow is an acclaimed movie director. Bigelow was the first woman to win an Oscar for her directing of The Hurt Locker in 2008.

Toni Morrison

Toni Morrison is an acclaimed novelist who has won the Nobel Prize for Literature for her novel Beloved.

Audra McDonald (Pictured)

Audra McDonald is a Broadway actress. Last summer she became the first person to win a Tony Award in every acting category.

Emma Watson

Emma Watson is a successful actress most popularly known from playing Hermione in the Harry Potter movies. On top of being an actress, Watson was appointed to be the United Nation’s Women Goodwill Ambassador.

Janet Yellen is the first Chair of the board of the United States Federal Reserve.

Nancy Pelosi was the first female Speaker of the United States House of Representative for 4 Year. Pelosi is now the House Minority Leader.




Malala Yousafzai (Pictured)

Malala Yousafzai was shot in 2012 by the Taliban because she wanted to go to school. Since recovering from her brain injury she has been advocating for girls right to education in Pakistan while attending school in Pakistan. In 2015 she was awarded the Nobel Peace prize for her work. She is the youngest recipient to date.

Angela Merkel

Angela Merkel is the first female Chancellor of Germany one of Europe’s most powerful countries. Merkel is listed as Time’s 57th most powerful person in the world. A total of 29 countries in the World are headed by a women.



Indra Nooyi– Pepsi (Pictured)

Indra Nooyi is the CEO of Pepsi, the second largest food company in the world.

Meg Whitman– HP

Meg Whitman is the current CEO of HP. However, over the past 20 years she has been an executive or CEO at Disney, DreamWorks and Ebay.

Mary T. Bara– General Motors

Mary is the first female CEO of General Motors as well as the first female CEO of any major international automaker.



Fabiola Gianotti (Pictured)

Fabiola Gianotti is an Italian scientist. Gianotti was the lead research in the Higgs-Boson particle discovery.

Jane Goodall

Jane Goodall is most popularly known for her research of chimpanzees over the past 55 years. Goodall is a well respected primatologist and anthropologist.
