This Year’s Hilarious, Memorable Academy Awards

All across the the globe, people gathered to watch the 2014 Academy Awards on Sunday night. Sadly, I did not get to watch the whole thing; but in case you haven’t noticed, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and every news site seemed to explode with the highlights of the Academy Awards. All week, my newsfeed has been blowing up with news about the show and all the funny moments that I missed out on. So, I am going to share some of these memorable moments with you all, in case you didn’t get to watch, either.

First, let us not forget the fact that Ellen Degeneres literally BROKE Twitter with her famous group-selfie during the  Awards. Yes, Twitter shut down because so many people were commenting on her photo.

The 27 Best Moments From The 2014 Academy Awards

Who on earth breaks Twitter? I didn’t even think it was possible. Oh Ellen, you have proven us wrong. It was a pretty epic group photo. Sadly, not everyone made it into the picture.

But sadly Liza Minnelli didn't make the cut:

Liza Minnelli (in the dark blue) didn’t quite make it into the picture. But it wasn’t a total loss. Don’t they both look wonderful?

When Ellen took this selfie with Liza Minnelli:

Now, someone who I was quite excited to see was Jennifer Lawrence, and of course she made quite the entrance.

And if that wasn’t embarrassing enough, her track record of tripping was brought up in front of everyone.

And how great is it that Ellen bought pizza for EVERYONE in the room?

And apparently it was really, really good pizza.

And we witnessed Brad Pitt chomping down on some pizza:

On top of all of that, there were some pretty sweet dance moves as well.

It seems like it was truly a wonderful night. The icing on the cake was Steve McQueen’s excitement when 12 Years A Slave won an award.

And when Steve McQueen was ecstatic over 12 Years a Slave winning:

What did you think about the Academy Awards? What were some of your favorite moments? Let us know! Goodbye for now.

When Ellen became Glinda:

Be Your Own Kind of Beautiful! <3

Everyone is different and unique. We all have our own special talents and skills, we all have our own weaknesses and struggles, too. But there is one thing we ALL have in common: we all want to feel beautiful, valued, and important. We, as humans, often strive to fit into the mold that society deems as “beautiful” rather than being beautiful in our own way.

Unfortunately, today’s “beauty” standards tend to be the exact opposite of what beauty really is.

Faces layered with make-up, scary small clothing sizes, bones showing, thigh gaps (just to name a few) are examples of the ridiculous expectations of girls in today’s world.  Just look through a magazine, or flip through some different channels on TV and you’ll have thousands of images thrown at you that create this image of what you “should” look like.

Most people don’t realize that these images are usually fake. They’re photoshopped so the models fit into society’s unrealistic expectations.

Just look at this before and after picture. Can you guess which one is real, and which one has been stretched, smoothed, tightened, air brushed, enhanced, brightened, and is almost completely fake?

don't ever be jealous of what you see in magazines!

Here’s a video about three women who participated in an experiment. They each did a  photoshoot and had their pictures professionally photoshopped, the same way models and celebs are photoshopped in magazines. Surprisingly, they didn’t really like what they saw:

Don’t ever believe what you see in the media.

Someone once told me that “comparison is the thief of joy.” I think this quote fits this situation perfectly. If you are always trying to be someone you’re not, how will you ever be truly happy? You are unique and special, and yes, BEAUTIFUL.

No one else can tell you otherwise.

Just because you may not look like your best friend, or wear the newest styles in the smallest sizes, just because you don’t look like the girl on the magazine cover, doesn’t mean you aren’t beautiful. To be truly beautiful is to be yourself.

beau·ti·ful [byoo-tuh-fuhl]

1.having beauty; possessing qualities that give great  pleasure or satisfaction to see, hear, think about, etc.;  delighting the senses or mind: a beautiful dress; a  beautiful speech.

2. excellent of its kind: a beautiful putt on the seventh  hole; The chef served us a beautiful roast of beef

3. wonderful; very pleasing or satisfying.

Beauty is not about what is seen on the outside, but rather what is on the inside. Have you ever heard someone talk about inner beauty? That is what we should strive for.

Be You!

I recently discovered this quote by Lady Gaga and found it to be very inspiring. In a world that is constantly trying to change us into something we are not, it is good to be reminded that we have the right to be who we are. There are plenty of pressures from all kinds of people that encourage us to fit into a certain mold. If we choose not to conform, we are typically faced with many obstacles including bullying or discrimination. It’s easy to give up and assume the roles that society expects of us. But why not stay strong? What do you have to lose if you were to just be yourself? Maybe a few shallow friends that didn’t really care about you in the first place. You see, twenty years from now no one is going to remember the clothes you wore or the weird things that you did. You probably won’t remember most of it either. So choose to be who you are today! Don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t belong or that you’re not good enough. Don’t ever be ashamed of being you!

Struggling with Fitting In at School? Have Hope!

Going through middle school and high school can be tough sometimes, especially if you are a girl. Things are changing and we all go through these awkward stages. During this time, you are learning who you are and how that looks. Comparing yourself to everyone at school is tough and you may feel like you don’t measure up to the “standard” that is placed before you. Magazines, honestly, don’t help at all. There are impossible standards for how you look and what you do and wear out there and it can be overwhelming at times. You may feel like you are the only one who doesn’t fit in; however, rest assured that you are definitely not the only one that has felt or is feeling this way!

ImageSome of our favorite celebs struggled in school to fit in and now look where they are. For example, Demi Lovato told People magazine that her years in middle school were anything but a breeze. Those in her school would make fun of her pursuing music and would make “hate petitions” and have people in the school sign it. Demi is now a beloved star who has really taken a stance against bullying, giving hope to those who feel alone every day at school.

Even Olympic gold medalist, Michael Phelps, struggled to fit in while growing up because of the size of his ears. Michael shared he would wear baseball caps in order to hide the size of his ears from those around him.

You are not alone in your struggle to fit in. Even those that are famous and “have it all together” have struggles. There is hope beyond your years in middle and high school. If you are struggling in school and feeling like you don’t fit in, have hope! Be yourself and learn to love the ways that you are different. Someone will love you for it later! Surround yourself with people who see your value and love you for who you are! They will be the voice that keeps you grounded and who will be there for you, no matter what happens or what you do!

Bieber Gets Expensive – Dates with Gomez

I’m sure you’re all aware of the teen celebrity relationship between Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez. Especially since the hype about Justin being the alleged father of a girl’s baby and the paternity test, this couple has been in the spotlight often. First of all, they’re both well-known stars who are very successful, and second, many teenagers like Bieber and Gomez and their work. Do you care to take a guess at how much Bieber has spent on his dates with Selena? Over $1 million.

From the multiple vacations to the extravagent dates, the couple has spent a lot of time together on romantic outings. They spent time vacationing in Spain, and most recently they spent a long, romantic week together in Hawaii. Most teenagers would never have the means to vacation with their boyfriend/girlfriend for a week in Europe let alone Hawaii.  What do their dates look like? They aren’t the typical “dinner and a  movie” kind of nights. No, instead, he rents out an entire theatre for Gomez and himself and has food brought in. He takes her to hockey games where they sit in private rooms to be alone and romantic. A favorite extravagent date was one spent at the Staples Center for dinner and a movie. To buy only one VIP room in the center, it costs about $400,000 annually, so one can imagine it was a pretty penny to rent out the entire center for a night. Plus he had to spend at least a couple thousand on the giant screen to watch The Titanic, and let’s not forget about the steak dinner he ordered. The night, in total, cost at least $200,000 minimum.

As you can gather, their dates aren’t those of an average teenage couple. He is spending a lot of money on their nights/weeks out, and that’s not even factoring in the gifts he showers her with while on such dates. Do you think it’s a good thing that he’s spending this much money on his girlfriend? Do you think it’s necessary for a guy to spend a lot of money on a date, or do you think spending time regardless of the cost is enough? Let us know what you think!

Does Your Heart Always Know What’s Right?

We would all like to believe that following your heart will lead you into a happy life.  People say that when you are in a relationship you will just know in your heart if it is right or not.  People have a sense when they are with the person they are meant to be with, and when they are not.  Shockingly, Kim Kardashian decided to file for divorce recently after only 72 days of marriage.  She told the public that her reasons for divorcing Kris Humphries is because she got a feeling deep in her heart that she needed to end the marriage.  According to the press’ speculations, Kris had no idea that it was coming.  However, a lot of people believe that Kim married Kris simply to make money off of the publicity for her wedding.  That may be true.  But if she really did love Kris and the wedding wasn’t a sham, then was it right for her to divorce him after only two months? Do you think that following your heart is a valid reason to divorce a man?

Personally I think that Kim should have consulted her heart before marrying Kris.  No one should jump into a marriage before they know whether or not they want to be with that person.  And yes, it is true to say that you don’t know what it is like to be married to someone until you are officially married.  So she could have gotten married and then learned things about Kris that she didn’t like.  However, I think you should try to make it work for more than two months.

But you may believe that the heart is always right.  You can follow it and you will always be happy.  I guess it’s just a matter of opinion.

Moving Mountains

Recently I read about a woman named Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner who climbed the second-highest mountain which had 14 of the world’s tallest peaks and was the first woman to do so without using any extra oxygen! This is an amazing accomplishment in itself, but to also be the first woman to succeed in this quest is outstanding. Now of days, women have a more active role in our culture than before the 19th century, however, we still have to work hard to make a title for ourselves in this world that is crafted towards men.

For example, if you read more of Kaltenbrunner’s story, you will find that she didn’t accomplish this climb the first time, but had tried at least four times already. Those previous climbs were not without sacrifice either! It says in the article that several of her fellow climbers had died on some of those trips, one just occurring the year before.

This goes to show that you don’t have to give up if you don’t at first succeed. It will seem like the world is working against you, but if you truly look within yourself for strength and know that what you set your mind to you will accomplish, nothing can stand in  your way. You don’t have to try to climb a K2 mountain to see how this works. You can easily apply this to your life in school, sports, extra-curricular activities, and future dreams. Set small goals for yourself and chose a route to take. If that route doesn’t work, try another, and another, until you reach your goal. This does take time and hard work, but don’t let being a female stop you from reaching your potential!

Gobble, gobble, gobble!

Thanksgiving is in 2 days!

I’m so excited! Turkey, mashed potates, cranberry sauce, and my family’s oddest tradition: clam dip and ruffles.
Thanksgiving and the holiday season is majorly concerned with food.  And directly related to food, is weight gain.  So many girls on my college campus are already talking about ways to shed or avoid holiday weight gain.  Usually these ways are silly, sometimes they are dangerous, but most importantly: none of them work.
One of the hardest things a girl has to deal with is her body image.  The media today bombards us with pictures of beautiful, flawless women flaunting handsome men on one arm and the latest Gucci bag on the other.  However, these celebrities really aren’t as “beautiful” as we are tricked to think.

Check out Kelly Clarkson, before and after photoshop:

Can you spot all the differences?

All those magazine covers are pretty misleading as well.

So next time you look at a magazine and think, “She’s so perfect,” remember, no one is that perfect.

Even though no one is “perfect”, every girl is beautiful.  So let yourself indulge this holiday season, because the benefits of good food and great company are so much better for your body than the latest fad diet.
